IAPH: 45% OF WORLD'S PORT SAW DECLINE IN CONTAINERSHIP CALLS
May 26, 2020
The International Association of Ports and Harbors ( IAPH) said in a recent report that 45% of ports have recorded drops in containership calls at various levels as the coronavirus outbreak continue to disrupt supply chains.

AIPH said 45% of ports report that the number of containership calls dipped between 5% and 25% compared to the 34% recorded a week ago. Some 8% of ports recorded a huge decline of over 25% in containership calls.

Those ports that reported over 25% fewer port calls said those in the cargo ship category was up by 16%.

In North America, containership calls decline significantly. AIPH said this week, 71% of the ports that participated in the poll experienced a 5%- to 5% drop in boxship calls, a figure above the world average.

AIPH, however, expects a recovery in the sector by the end of May until the beginning of June for some Asian ports in terms of container shipping services. Ports in North America and Europe is expected to rebound 6 to 8 weeks later.

"We now see Asian ports fully operational and with promising signs in terms of recovery. European ports are gradually returning to the 'new normal', while ports in regions such as South America and Africa are having to adapt to the contagion, which in many cases is reaching its peak there,” said IAPH director-general Patrick Verhoeven.

“We expect more ports in the Middle East and Asia to participate in the next survey.”
