AIRASIA X SETS BAHRAIN AS NEW HUB IN GLOBAL EXPANSION
February 11, 2026

AirAsia X is expanding its medium‑haul network beyond Asia by designating Bahrain as a new strategic hub, a move aimed at strengthening links between Asia, the Middle East, Europe and Australia.

The shift follows a Letter of Intent signed in late 2025 with Bahrain’s transport ministry and reflects the carrier’s broader plan to build a more globally connected long‑haul network supported by hubs outside Southeast Asia.

AirAsia X’s expansion plans were underscored by comments from Tony Fernandes, CEO of Capital A and advisor to AAX, who said the move to establish Bahrain as a strategic hub marks a pivotal step in the group’s wider network ambitions.

“This is a defining step in the next phase of AAX’s growth. Bahrain as our strategic aviation hub allows us to connect Asia with the Middle East and Europe more effectively while creating a scalable platform for future growth. Beyond the airline, this partnership strengthens the broader aviation ecosystem, enabling Capital A businesses such as cargo and MRO services to scale alongside AAX.”

“Today, Teleport marks an important milestone as  its first flight arrives in Bahrain, following its recent US$50 million capital raise - a move that will help position the Kingdom as a key aviation and logistics hub in the region,” he added, noting that looking ahead, the carrier will deepen partnerships with airports, tourism authorities and industry stakeholders to unlock new demand corridors.

AirAsia X Group CEO Bo Lingam said the milestone reflects the carrier’s ongoing shift toward becoming a more globally connected airline. He noted that the company is rebuilding with a more disciplined approach after the challenges of the pandemic, supported by an orderbook of 374 aircraft and a five‑year plan to expand its presence across key regions. Bahrain forms part of its long‑term network strategy to link ASEAN and Asia with wider global markets.

He noted that the group’s priorities include measured fleet growth, strengthening core hubs, and developing ancillary and digital businesses, among others.

Bahrain framed the agreement as a move that strengthens its role in regional trade and air cargo connectivity, positioning the kingdom to capture more flows between Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Europe.

H.E. Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Minister of Finance and National Economy, said the partnership with AirAsia X is a strategic step that reinforces Bahrain’s position as a hub for global movement of goods and people. “This agreement with AirAsia X is a strategic decision that reflects Bahrain’s strength as an economic partner, and its role as a centre for regional and global connectivity. The investment will reinforce Bahrain’s position as a key gateway linking Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe, while delivering tangible economic benefits.”

He added that the partnership will create, among others, direct employment across aviation operations and generate wider opportunities across logistics, hospitality, and related services.

As part of its growth strategy, AirAsia X said it will continue to expand its long-haul operations and hub connectivity, supported by ongoing fleet upgrades, digital initiatives and strategic partnerships.

The airline remains focused on delivering value-driven travel while strengthening its role as a bridge between key global regions through its hub-and-network model.
