CMA CGM STOPS TRANSPORTING PLASTIC WASTE AS OF JUNE 1
June 1, 2022

CMA CGM will no longer be transporting plastic waste on board its ships as of June 1 as part of its continued push for more sustainable trade.

The decision was earlier announced by the French logistics company in February, noting the move as a "landmark decision" in the shipping industry meant to protect the oceans and its biodiversity.

"As of June 1, 2022, CMA CGM will no longer transport plastic waste on board its ships," CMA CGM said in an announcement on the 1st of June. "Too much plastic waste ends up in the oceans because it is not properly treated at the destination."

The CMA CGM Group stopped loading plastic cargo waste on April 15 ahead of the June 1 schedule to no longer carry plastic waste on any of its ships worldwide.

"To ensure the effectiveness of this measure, we have implemented a ban on HS code 3915 in our booking system. Misrepresentation of the nature of the goods will result in the blacklisting of the offending entity," CMA CGM said.

"This historic decision in the shipping industry will contribute to the protection of the oceans and biodiversity," it added.
