DHL GLOBAL FORWARDING INDONESIA LAUNCHES ITS FIRST EV LOGISTICS HUB
March 23, 2024

DHL Global Forwarding has launched its first EV logistics hub in Indonesia, the Batam EV Center of Excellence.

DHL tagged the facility as a "first-of-its-kind logistics hub in Asia," located in Batam City, noted for its strategic position as a gateway for air and sea transportation.

"[Batam EV Center of Excellence] aims to bridge the gap in the region's evolving electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem, catering specifically to the growing EV industry," DHL said in a statement.

It noted that the facility offers customers a comprehensive and modular range of services including inbound and outbound logistics across various transportation modes, warehousing with value-added services such as battery check and charge, and full aftermarket battery handling.

This handling encompasses storage, recharging, and dealer services for warranty issues, battery replacement, and removal.

The facility also features temperature and humidity-controlled rooms and a one-stop solution with chambers for both general and dangerous goods.

DHL noted that Batam's close proximity to Asia Pacific's manufacturing and trade activities positions it as an emerging international hub, making it the ideal location for the new EV Center of Excellence.

"Customers can enjoy seamless connectivity to global markets without compromising on lead times, complemented by Batam's Free Trade Zone and Special Economic Zone status, which maximizes efficiency," the global logistics firm added.

Vincent Yong, president director of DHL Global Forwarding Indonesia, cited the country's abundant natural resources of nickel and cobalt, putting it at the forefront of developing an integrated EV supply chain.

"With the government's goal of positioning the country among the top three global EV battery producers by 2027, the establishment of Batam EV Center of Excellence marks a significant milestone in supporting the objective, further bolstering the local EV industry," he said.

The EV Center of Excellence is part of the region's first-ever EV and battery logistics hub, built by DHL Global Forwarding and developed in close cooperation with Team EV of DHL Customer Solutions and Innovation (CSI).

The EV logistics hub is a multi-user facility that includes provisions for tailored expansion to accommodate specific requirements.

DHL said the facility not only complies with safety and security standards for optimal handling of EV batteries but also holds ISO 9001, 14001, and 22301 certifications.

"We are committed to empowering our customers with seamless connectivity and unparalleled service excellence with our newest EV Center of Excellence. As part of our global network with centres in Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East, and with further expansion underway, customers not only gain access to their local market but also to international growth opportunities," said Fathi Tlatli, president of Global Sector Auto-Mobility at DHL CSI.

In addition to the launch of its Batam EV Center of Excellence, DHL Global Forwarding Indonesia is introducing its new electric van, which covers pick-up and delivery within the Greater Jakarta and Karawang area.

DHL said this deployment of EVs for last-mile delivery further underscores its commitment to sustainability and reducing carbon emissions while helping customers expand their green footprint.

The electric van is equipped with rapid charging capabilities, allowing for a recharge in just over an hour.

DHL said the electric van — capable of travelling up to 300 kilometres on a full charge —  offers a reliable and environmentally friendly transportation solution.
