KITAKYUSHU AIRPORT, DHL MOVE RECORD SHIPMENT OF CHIP‑MAKING EQUIPMENT
March 12, 2026

Kitakyushu Airport, working with DHL Global Forwarding, has completed the largest and most technically demanding air transport of semiconductor manufacturing equipment ever handled at the airport, marking a major milestone for the region’s growing role in chip‑related logistics.

The shipment — weighing roughly 180 tons — was flown from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to Kitakyushu on a dedicated large freighter at the end of last year. The operation required extensive planning and specialized handling to meet the strict transport standards associated with semiconductor tools.

Kitakyushu Airport began preparing in 2023 to support imports of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, with DHL Global Forwarding Japan and Korean Air leading the effort.

The airport worked closely with ground‑handling companies to build a system capable of managing such high‑value, sensitive cargo. Teams collaborated on risk assessments, temperature and humidity controls, and vibration‑mitigation measures to ensure safe transport throughout the journey from Amsterdam to Kitakyushu. These efforts have helped establish a stable framework for handling future semiconductor shipments.

Karsten Michaelis, CEO for North Asia at DHL Global Forwarding and president/representative director of DHL Global Forwarding Japan, said semiconductors are the backbone of modern technology, and DHL has built a robust framework to support this critical supply chain with precision and expertise.

"By establishing a dedicated office at Kitakyushu Airport – supported by our Semiconductor Specialist Team and working closely with the Kitakyushu Airport authorities and Korean Air – we have created an integrated structure that combines infrastructure development with seamless operational collaboration."

"Beyond this project, DHL's global CapX Qualification Program and standardized processes across locations—including Narita International Airport, Kansai International Airport, and Kitakyushu Airport—ensure consistency, safety, and operational excellence. We are proud to be a part of this milestone and reaffirm our commitment to driving reliability and innovation in semiconductor logistics."

The Kitakyushu Airport Promotion Council — made up of Fukuoka Prefecture, Kitakyushu City and other members — supports the consolidation of semiconductor‑related cargo through subsidies for international air freight.

The council also offers additional subsidies specifically for transporting semiconductor manufacturing equipment and related items.
