PORT OF NY/NJ RETAINS SECOND‑BUSIEST POSITION THROUGH NOVEMBER
January 6, 2026

The Port of New York and New Jersey (Port of NY/NJ) handled 509,124 loaded TEUs in November 2025, maintaining its position as the nation's second‑busiest container gateway, according to the Port Authority.

While the agency did not publish a full month‑on‑month comparison, November's loaded throughput came in below October's total volume of 727,059 TEUs and reflected a broader year‑on‑year softening tied to easing post‑pandemic demand and shifting import patterns.

Port of NY/NJ handled said it also maintained the same status over the first 11 months of the year, moving a total of 5,520,444 loaded TEUs from January through November.

The port handled 740,254 TEUs in September 2025, representing a 5% decrease from the 779,388 TEUs recorded in September 2024.

Monthly volumes fluctuated but remained generally strong, with notable peaks in January, March, and October.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey last month approved a 33‑year lease extension with Maher Terminals, the port's largest and busiest container terminal, securing its operations through 2063.

The agreement includes commitments for major investments in maintenance, sustainability and capacity upgrades, which the Port Authority said will provide long‑term stability across the regional supply chain and position the East Coast’s busiest port to handle continued cargo growth in the decades ahead.

Officials noted that long‑term leases such as this one help ensure the port can meet projected demand, with cargo volumes expected to double or even triple by 2050 under the Port Master Plan.
