Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) closed 2025 on a strong note with full‑year cargo throughput surpassing 5 million tonnes, cementing its place among the world's busiest air freight hubs.

HKIA, which has held the world’s busiest cargo airport title for 13 of the last 14 years, said cargo throughput grew to 5.07 millon tonnes, up 2.7% compared to 2024.

Full year flight movements rose by 8.7% compared to 2024, reaching 394,730 during the year.

In December, the airport handled 462,000 tonnes of air freight, growing 3.6% year-on-year. This is however, slightly lower than the 486,000 tonnes recorded in November.

HKIA said exports and transshipment both increased during the month, with transshipments recording 18% growth.

Flight movements for the period rose 7.1% year on year to 35,920.

Cargo traffic to and from Southeast Asia, Europe and the Chinese Mainland grew the most among key trading regions.

"The strong traffic performance in 2025 marks a new milestone, securing our position as the leading international aviation hub in Asia," said Vivian Cheung, chief executive officer of Airport Authority Hong Kong.

"During the year we also further strengthened connectivity by introducing 30 new destinations across the globe, including Abu Dhabi, Brussels and Dallas, while increasing flight frequencies on major routes."

"Our collective efforts have been widely recognised with some 80 prestigious awards received last year on different aspects of our operation and service — a testament to the dedication and excellence of the airport community," Cheung added.
